Mum’s Best and Quickest Wafer Slices

Updated: 2 days ago

The best and quickest wafer slices are, of course, Mum’s!

I always remember them as a sweet that perfectly blended simplicity and joy. The kitchen would fill with the rich, sweet aroma of the warm filling, and we’d wait impatiently for Mum to spread each layer and press the wafers together until set. The hardest part was waiting for them to cool and be neatly sliced though we would have gladly devoured them immediately, still warm and soft.

Those wafers held more than just cocoa and sometimes walnut filling, they carried the warmth of home a comforting sense of safety and the quiet assurance that everything was right as long as Mum was there.

Ingredients

(1 cup = 200 ml)

  • 250 g butter

  • 1 cup milk

  • 1.5 cups sugar (300 g)

  • 1 sachet vanilla sugar

  • 3 squares of milk chocolate or 2 tablespoons cocoa powder

  • Plus 1 packet of wafer sheets

Method

  1. Place all the ingredients into a saucepan. It’s best to use the cold butter straight from the fridge. Stir and once it comes to the boil, cook over medium heat for about 10 minutes. Spread the hot filling over all the wafer sheets.

  2. Once cooled, place the filled wafers into a clean bag. Put a tray and something heavy on top (a carton of juice or milk works well) to press them down. It’s best to leave them like this overnight so the wafers soften nicely.

  3. Don’t worry if the filling seems a bit runny that’s exactly how it should be. It will spread easily between the wafer layers and the chocolate will firm it up as it cools. If you cook it for too long, the filling may crystallise.

Enjoy!

Najbolje i Najbrže Oblatne

Sastojci

(1 čaša=2dcl)

250 g margarina

1 čaša mleka

1.5 čaša šećera (300g)

1 vrećica vanilin šećera

3 rebra mlečne čokolade ili

2 kašike kakaa

I jos je potreban 1 paket oblatni

Priprema

2. Neka Vas ne zabrine ako fil bude ređi, tako i treba, em' će se lepo i lako namazati na listove oblatne a čokloada će ga stvrdnuti tokom hlađenja. Dužim kuvanjem riskirate da se fil ušećeri.
