Ovi tradicionalni kolačići, najčešće pravljeni u specijalnim metalnim kalupima, neizostavni su na prazničnim trpezama i porodičnim okupljanjima. Spoj jednostavnih sastojaka i bogatog ukusa orasa čini ih neodoljivim iznova i iznova.

150 g šećera
1 vrecica vanilin šećera
200 g mljevenih orasa
250 g masti (ili maslaca)
2 jaja
Jos potrebno
prah šećer zamirisan vanilijom

1. U prosijano brašno dodati obe vrste šećera, orase, mast, jaja i zamesiti glatko tjesto. Zamotati u foliju i staviti u frižider da odmori oko 1/2 sata.
Staviti u limene kutije do služenja.

Old fashioned walnut cookies. Bet you can’t eat just one!
Walnut cookies, known as Šape, are a beloved classic of traditional Balkan baking tender, fragrant, and full of nostalgic charm. Typically made in special metal molds, these cookies are a staple at holiday gatherings and family celebrations. With simple ingredients and the rich flavor of walnuts, they’re a timeless treat that brings comfort in every bite.
Ingredients
500 g flour
150 g caster sugar
10 g vanilla sugar
200 g ground walnut
250 g lard (or butter)
2 eggs
You will also need
100 g icing sugar
Method
1. Sift the flour in a large mixing bowl and add the sugars, walnut, lard and eggs, then mix it into a soft dough. Cover in cling film and leave to cool in the fridge for 30 minutes.
2. Preheat the oven to 170 C (fan). Grease the moulds with sunflower oil spray and take a teaspoon of dough to fill each mould.
3. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until they begin to brown slightly, but they should remain mostly pale. Take them out while they're still hot and carefully roll them in icing sugar. They can be kept in an airtight container for a couple of weeks.
Interesting to know
The origin of Šape (meaning "paws" in Serbian) comes from the traditional baking heritage of the Balkans, especially Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia. These cookies are named after the distinctive molds they’re baked in, which often resemble animal paw prints or floral shapes.
Šape have been a beloved part of festive baking for generations, especially during Christmas and other family celebrations. They reflect the region’s use of simple, hearty ingredients—particularly walnuts, which are abundant and deeply rooted in local dessert traditions.
Though recipes may vary slightly from one household to another, Šape are known for their crumbly, melt-in-your-mouth texture, delicate sweetness, and rich walnut flavor. More than just cookies, they are a nostalgic symbol of home, warmth, and tradition.
